Town hall at Ostia beach
The Palace of the Governorate of Ostia was built between 1924 and 1928 on a project by the architect Vincenzo Fasolo (1885-1969).
The foundation stone of the building, located in Piazza della Stazione Vecchia, was laid on 10 August 1924: the same day as the Rome-Lido railway was inaugurated.
The palace was built in compliance with the classical monumental criteria, using important materials such as Tivoli travertine and the golden tuff of the Roman countryside.
Among the most valuable elements of the entire complex is the Tower, decorated with high reliefs made of travertine powder mixture.
The whole building, with particular attention to the external facades, has been decorated by Umberto Calzolari, on sketches he has elaborated and approved by Fasolo.
For a few years, one wing of the building hosted the first telephone switchboard in Ostia and elementary schools. Later, from the end of the Second World War until the early 1980s, it was the only emergency room in the neighbourhood.
Present seat of the Municipality of Rome X, it is open to the public for cultural use, through the organization of various exhibitions and events within some of its premises.
