La Quercia del Tasso on Gianicolo

The revered oak of poet Torquato Tasso

“La quercia del Tasso” (lah-kwertcha-dhal-Tahzzo), in Rome, is a place not so many romans have ever heard of: an oak (“quercia” in Italian) under the shade of which the famous poet “Torquato Tasso” used to go to look for inspiration. The oak stands on the Gianicolo hill, that is not part of the famous seven on which the ancient city of Rome was built back in the 8th century b.C., on a slope where only a few people walk and stop.

Right beneath the oak, there stands a small open-air theatre that gets advantage of the hillside to accomodate people above the stage: less than a hundred seats available during summertime, when evening breeze helps cool off the hottest days.
