Giulio II Castle
The Giulio II (“djuleeoh secondoh”) Castle at Ostia Antica (“Osteeah Anteecah”) is located where the Tevere river once flowed into the Thyrrenean sea and was built to prevent any menace could sail on to the Pope and the city of Rome and to control the inbound trades that sustained the city in the 15th century.
Nowadays the river flows less than a mile from the Castle: a dramatic flood at the end of the 16th century changed the course of the river forever, so the Castle became a jail then was abandoned once and for all.
Within the outer walls of the Castle, today, thrives a small village called “The Borghetto” (means: small neighbourhood), where few lucky families live, a few steps away from the Archeological Park.
