Flavius Potitus: a day in the life of an Ostia Antica cisiarius

Flavius Potitus, a robust young man of 25, commands his “Cisia”, a nimble chariot pulled by two sturdy mules, with the skill and precision of a seasoned driver. Living in Ostia Antica, the bustling port city of Rome, Potitus is part of the Cisiarii, a powerful guild renowned for its influence in the Senate and indispensable role in the smooth functioning of the Republic.

Every morning, before the first light of dawn, Potitus harnesses his mules and loads his chariot with goods—fresh fish, olive oil, amphorae of wine, and other commodities destined for Rome. The journey to the capital is grueling, requiring him to navigate crowded roads, unpredictable weather, and the occasional highwayman. Yet, the rewards of his trade are substantial. The guild ensures fair wages and protection, and Potitus takes pride in being a vital link in the lifeline between Ostia Antica and Rome.

Off the road, Potitus is a devout worshiper of Mithra, the god of light and truth. He attends secret gatherings in shadowy caverns, where the rituals of his faith strengthen his resolve and provide camaraderie among his fellow initiates. It was at one such gathering that he first laid eyes on Clodia, a radiant young woman whose grace and wit captivated him. Since then, thoughts of her have accompanied him on every journey, and he dreams of asking for her hand in marriage, knowing her acceptance would complete his life.

The Cisiarii guild, with its extensive network and political clout, stands ready to support its members in personal and professional endeavors; a guild so powerful and rich that builds its own private thermal baths in Ostia Antica where only members and their families can enjoy the benefits of the three pools system (cold, warm and hot water). With their backing, Potitus feels confident in pursuing his ambitions. His life, though arduous, reflects the vibrancy and interconnectedness of the Roman Republic—a world where faith, love, and labor are tightly intertwined.

For now, as the wheels of his Cisia roll relentlessly toward Rome, exiting Romana gate through the walls of Ostia Antica, Potitus’s dreams of a brighter future fuel his tireless spirit.
