Anita Garibaldi: a rebel spirit like no girl before
Anita Garibaldi, life partner of Giuseppe Garibaldi, was a rebel spirit from a young age, she soon learned to ride and this will help her in the future.
During the revolt against the Brazilian empire she looked with admiration at the rebels, dreaming of one day joining them, that happened on 1839 when she started to fight the Empire, there she met Garibaldi who conquered her by telling her “devi essere mia” in italian (“you got to be mine”); she left her husband and followed the Italian general in his battles both in South America and in Italy.
One day the Brazilian forces surrounded her house, killed the men left by Garibaldi to defend her and tried to capture her.
But Anita, with the baby in her arms, jumped out of a window on the horse and ran away into the woods.
Her riding skills and her vitality saved her once again.
She met her death in 1849 in Italy, while trying to reach Venice to fight against the Austrian oppressors.
Anita is one of the heroes of Italy’s path to Independence.
