Experience impressive Ostia Antica

Experience impressive Ostia Antica, the most important commercial harbour of the Roman Empire built where the Tevere river met the Thyrrenian sea.

Ostia Antica, Ostia meaning “mouth” of the river in Latin, is the biggest archeological site in Europe: the harbour and the city were built in the 6th century B.C., probably by King Ancus Marcius, then improved and enlarged by Caesar and then by emperor Tiberius. Nowadays only half of the ancient port city has been dug out, thus resulting even bigger than Pompei and less crowded.

In front of the archeological site stands the medieval citadel, dating around 9th century A.D., with its walls and the perfectly preserved Pope Giulio II castle.
