Testaccio Food Market walking tour
The walking tour starts with an awesome view of the “Piramide Cestia”, the only surviving Pyramid of ancient Rome.
The Testaccio walking tour then heads to the “Non Catholic Cemetery”: also known as “The Lost Poets garden” a silent, peaceful and inspiring park in the heart of Rome, that hosts the remains, among others, of British poets Shelley and Keats.
The tour goes on around “Monte dei Cocci”, a hill made of broken pieces af terracotta vases (cocci means shards), takes a look at the unique industrial archeology complex of the “Mattatoio” (the city old slaughterhouse) and then reaches the "Testaccio food market" where we will enjoy a tasty supplì (a fried ball of rice with tomato and mozzarella) or a juicy "panino" or a slice of pizza, a sip of "romanella" (a popular local sparkling wine) and a nice chat about Rome and its bi-millenial history.

Jake Mullard– :
While being in Rome with my family on a business trip, we had the opportunity to join the non-catholic cemetery and Testaccio market walking tour with Chiara and Federico. Three hours so full of amazing views, nice chat and delicious roman food.
If you happen to be in Rome do not miss this experience.

This was my first experience and Chiara and Federico they were really a good start! We met at Piramide Station and all was very smooth, they are very friendly and you could tell that they are “seasoned” travellers and that they truly enjoy sharing their knowledge with other travellers in a relaxed environment. The Cemetery itself is an unmissable experience: a beautiful and peaceful spot right next to the Piramide Cestia where you can walk through the graves of poets Shelley and Keats or visit the grave of the great dancer and choreographer Lindsay Kemp who inspired David Bowie. (just to name a few of the most well known) What I really liked though is that Chiara and Federico also tell you stories about less famous people who led incredible lives too. For instance today I had the chance to learn about Sarah Parker Remund, an Afro-American lecturer I did not know, who was an agent of the American Anti-slavery Society. I really appreciated this extra insight. After this peaceful walk we headed to Testaccio Market, which is a real feast for the eyes and the palate! Lots of stalls with colourful and juicy fruit and vegetables, salad bars, street food stalls which cater for all tastes from vegan to meat lovers to pasta addicts, but also shoes, clothes, flowers and lot more. So it felt as a truly local and lovely morning. I would certainly recommend this walk to any traveller wanting to get a taste of Rome away from the (touristy) madding crowd and hope to meet Chiara and Federico again!

What a day! I didn’t expect anything like this: it is a tour that goes beyond any expectation, a part of Rome that is definitely different from the one I knew. The cemetery is such a special place that you seem to be dreaming; then the vibes you get walking around the food market and all those juicy and tasty food, what can I say: I really recommend it! Thank you to my hosts they were such a nice and lovely company.

This tour was such a cool way to learn about Rome from a unique vantage point. Chiara and Federico met us at a Pyramid monument which had an interesting history. We then stepped into an enchanting, hidden garden and cemetery where poets Keats and Shelley are buried..guarded by the many cats who have free reign there! It was also fascinating to see the hill made of the broken amphorae from so long ago. Next we learned about local food culture with a visit to Testaccio’s market. Best focaccia of my life! It was wonderful to end the experience with a drink and bite shared with our local guides and asking them questions about everyday life as real Romans! I would recommend this tour for anyone who likes to get off the beaten path for a more authentic and genuine experience.
